Four ways to pull off the ankle-grazing trendNovember 7, 2017
When it comes to flashing a little bit of skin, we believe there’s no classier way to do it than with the ankle. Indeed, embracing “ankle-grazing” cropped trousers or skirts can be both slimming and leg-lengthening when done the right way. This trend is so omnipresent, it has even snuck its way into menswear (heard of the mankle anyone?). Below are our four tried and tested ways to flash your ankles.
1. Cropped wide-leg trousers.
These have been all over the runways of late. To pull off this bold look, choose fabrics that are crisp but not heavy so as not to completely drown out your figure. You can always bring a pair of trousers into us at Alexia Alterations, and we can cut and crop to your heart’s content. Shorter ladies – add length by selecting a pair with a slimmer cut. Wide-leg trousers should have a high-rise fit to emphasise your waistline. You can add further definition by tucking in a silk shirt and topping it off with a cropped jacket to keep things proportional. When it comes to footwear, the world is your oyster. Wear trainers or smoking slippers for an everyday look, or take it into evening with killer platform pumps.
2. Ankle-grazer jeans.
Think of ankle-grazers as skinny jeans’ sassy younger cousin. Select a slim-fit pair that finishes no more than six centimetres above the ankle, so as to avoid entering capri territory. A small sliver of visible ankle over sockless feet will create the illusion of length. You can go for a casual look with classic white trainers, or dress up your jeans with a pair of slip-on mules. A slight flare or frayed effect at the hem adds extra intrigue.
Also known as “split skirts” because of their distinctive shape, culottes create a bold and beautiful silhouette. The trick is to find the right length. Culottes should finish at your legs’ slimmest part – which, for most women, is just above the ankle. When it comes to shoes, the more foot you show, the longer your legs will look – so ditch the socks! Strappy heels or statement pumps add extra length to your legs and create a flattering look. Finish off the outfit with a crop top or tucked in shirt.
4. A long midi skirt.
Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn in a super chic midi skirt. Though they tend to finish at calf-length, try to find a longer style that exposes just a hint of ankle for a more modern and leg-elongating look. For daytime, pair your skirt with casual white or metallic trainers. Low kitten heels or strappy sandals are perfect for parties and dressy affairs.
